Babylonia zeylanica - The attractive Babylonia snail for marine aquariums

Description and features

Babylonia zeylanica is a medium-sized, strikingly patterned sea snail with a cream-colored shell and brown to dark purple spots or bands. The shell is smooth, slightly shiny and pear-shaped, while the strong creeping foot and long siphon give it an active, questing appearance. This species is particularly popular because of its exotic pattern and interesting behavior.

Keeping in a marine aquarium

The Babylonia snail is a burrowing bottom dweller that prefers to live in fine sand. It is robust, peaceful and suitable for both mixed reef tanks and fish-only tanks. Its constant burrowing and burrowing loosens up the substrate and prevents localized fouling zones. The snail is mainly nocturnal, but also emerges during the day when food is available.

A sandy substrate is essential for this species.

Care and nutrition

Babylonia zeylanica is an opportunistic carnivore and scavenger. It feeds on:

  • Feed residues

  • Frozen food (mysis, artemia, krill)

  • Detritus and dead material

  • Smaller worms, Bristle worms or carrion

In very „clean“ tanks, it requires regular feeding as it does not eat algae growth. A good supply is important to ensure a healthy animal in the long term.

With its exotic pattern, active behavior and useful burrowing in the substrate, the Babylonia snail is an attractive and helpful addition to many saltwater aquariums.
