Salmacis sp. - The „Pink Lady“ sea urchin for the marine aquarium
Description and features
The „Pink Lady“ sea urchin from the genus Salmacis is an exceptionally colorful and decorative sea urchin that immediately catches the eye with its pink to magenta spines. Its rounded body, often patterned with delicate shades of white or cream, gives it an elegant yet exotic appearance. Due to its moderate size and calm behavior, it is well suited to reef aquariums, where it is active as a peaceful and useful aufwuchsfresser.
Keeping in a marine aquarium
The Salmacis-species are robust and highly adaptable sea urchins that prefer stable water conditions and sufficient hiding places in the live rock. The „Pink Lady“ sea urchin is a gentle inhabitant that can be easily socialized with fish, shrimps, snails and most corals. It moves continuously over the rock and keeps algae development in check thanks to its grazing activity. An aquarium from around 50-300 liters offers it sufficient space and sufficient growth.
Care and nutrition
The main diet of the „Pink Lady“ sea urchin consists of algae growth, biofilms and microalgae. In nutrient-poor tanks or when algae production is low, supplementary feeding should be provided, for example with:
-
Nori or other dried seaweed
-
Spirulina-rich food leaves
-
Fresh macroalgae
Through its constant algae care, the „Pink Lady“ sea urchin contributes to a balanced, clean reef aquarium and also impresses with its unique, colorful appearance.
