OceanMotion
Flow is life!
In marine aquariums, the current is one of the most discussed topics, which is why it is always a challenge to adjust it optimally to the needs of the animals. As flow pumps have a specific orientation, the direction of flow is fixed and not very varied. With the OceanMotion, it is possible to set flow pumps to a freely adjustable rotational movement.
The resulting flow pattern is very varied and turbulent, imitating the natural conditions in the reef very well. This ensures a significantly better flow in reef aquariums with fewer pumps or pumps with reduced output, which can prevent detritus deposits.
To put together a complete set, you need the following items:
- one or more Rotary units
- one Controller with two or four connections, depending on how many rotary units you want to use
- Pump holder, suitable for your flow pumps

Flow in the marine aquarium: importance, tasks and advantages of swivel flow pumps
A stable and near-natural Flow is one of the most important foundations of a successful Marine aquarium. Coral reefs are subject to constantly changing water movements, which have a significant influence on the health of corals, fish and microorganisms. To simulate these conditions in the home aquarium, we use Flow pumps, in particular Swivel models, for use.
Why is current so important in a marine aquarium?
1. nutrient transport and gas exchange
A sufficient current ensures that oxygen and carbon dioxide are evenly distributed in the tank. At the same time, important nutrients are transported to corals and sponges, which would quickly be undersupplied in still water.
2. removal of metabolic products
Corals and other sessile animals require constant water movement in order to release metabolic waste. Stagnant areas („dead spots“) promote the accumulation of detritus, which in turn leads to increased nitrate and phosphate levels.
3. near-natural conditions for corals
Many coral species are dependent on changing, sometimes strong currents. They open up better, grow more compactly and show more intense colors when they are in a dynamic water movement.
4. promotion of biological filtration
A good flow supports filter bacteria throughout the entire system - in the live rock, filter material and substrate. This improves the self-cleaning power of the aquarium.
Advantages of swivel flow pumps
Swivel flow pumps are among the most modern solutions in the field of water circulation. They offer numerous advantages over rigidly aligned pumps:
1. flexible alignment for optimum flow patterns
Thanks to swivel brackets, the water jet can be targeted at areas that are otherwise difficult to reach. This effectively prevents the formation of „dead zones“.
2. natural, alternating flow
In combination with controllers, swiveling pumps create realistic flow scenarios - from wave-like movements to chaotic structures as they occur in real coral reefs.
3. gentle on corals and animals
Sensitive corals can be protected by the option of diffusing or indirectly directing the jet. Excessive direct pressure is avoided without reducing the water movement.
4. efficient energy distribution
Modern, swivel-mounted flow pumps are very energy-efficient. Thanks to their flexible alignment, a few well-placed pumps can provide full pool illumination with flow.
5. easy installation and maintenance
Magnetic brackets and ball joints enable precise alignment. Cleaning is also straightforward, as the pumps can be easily removed.
How many flow pumps does a saltwater aquarium need?
The ideal number and performance depend on the following factors:
-
Pool size and shape
-
Coral stocking (soft corals, LPS, SPS)
-
Reef structure
-
Flow requirements of the residents
The basic rule is:
The total flow should be 20-40 times the pool volume per hour - even more for SPS-heavy reef aquariums.
Swivel flow pumps for a healthy reef aquarium
An optimal current is essential for the health and natural behavior of the inhabitants in the marine aquarium. Swivel flow pumps allow perfect adaptation to individual tank conditions and create dynamic flow patterns that come very close to the natural conditions of a coral reef.
With the correct placement and setting, they make a significant contribution to a stable, clean and lively reef aquarium.
