Monetaria annulus - The elegant gold ring cowrie for the marine aquarium

Description and features

Monetaria annulus, also known as the golden-ringed cowrie, is a small to medium-sized cowrie snail with a characteristic, shiny shell surface. The shell has a light to cream-colored base with the typical golden-yellow ring on the dorsal surface - an unmistakable feature of this species. The underside is smooth and slightly serrated, as is typical for cowries. With a size of 2-4 cm, it remains manageable and decorative.

Keeping in a marine aquarium

The golden-ringed cowrie is a robust and peaceful snail that is well suited to reef aquariums of various sizes. It is mainly nocturnal and often spends the day in caves or under rocks. It can easily be kept with fish, shrimps and most invertebrates.

Care and nutrition

Monetaria annulus feeds mainly on algae films, biofilms and detritus. It thus contributes to the cleanliness of rocks and glass surfaces. In very clean aquaria, it can be supplemented with nori algae or fine frozen food. A well-established tank with sufficient growth is ideal.

With its shiny gold ring, elegant body and useful cleaning work, the gold ring cowrie is an attractive and easy-to-care-for inhabitant of any marine aquarium.
