Mespilia globulus - The popular spherical sea urchin for the marine aquarium
Description and features
The Mespilia globulus, also as Blue star sea urchin or Blue Tuxedo Urchin is an extremely attractive and peaceful sea urchin for saltwater aquariums. With its characteristic deep blue or turquoise bands and round, compact body shape, it is one of the most popular invertebrates in reef aquariums. Its intense coloration makes it a real eye-catcher and ensures a natural and lively look in the aquarium.
Keeping in a marine aquarium
Mespilia globulus is an ideal algae eater and makes an effective contribution to biological cleaning in the reef aquarium. It moves leisurely over the rock and eats various types of algae, including stubborn deposits. Stable water quality with good carbonate hardness and calcium levels is particularly important for its health. Sufficient live rock should also be available so that it can find enough food and hiding places. The blue star urchin is considered to be absolutely peaceful and can easily be kept together with fish, shrimps, corals and other invertebrates.
Care and nutrition
The diet of Mespilia globulus consists mainly of growth and microalgae, which it finds independently in the aquarium. In tanks with low algae growth, it should be supplemented with nori algae or special sea urchin food to ensure an optimal supply. Its regular, natural algae care makes it a valuable and useful inhabitant in any reef aquarium.
